How it looks in use
Abbeywell
A blackletter you can actually read. Round open bowls, broad-nib strokes and a friendly sort of gravity.
Abbeywell
About the family
Most blackletter asks the reader to squint. Abbeywell does not. The bowls stay round and open, the letters stand apart, and the broad-nib shading gives each stroke a thick side and a thin side like real pen work. Stems end in small flat feet. It reads as old and handmade without turning into a riddle, and the four weights step up cleanly from a light pen line to something quite solid. It is happy at headline size and will survive a short paragraph, a menu or a quote. A whole page of it is still a lot of Middle Ages for one sitting.
